The Mahama 2024 Campaign has accused the Institute of Economic Affairs (IEA) of fronting for the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) in an attempt to manipulate the electoral process.
The accusation follows an announcement of a presidential debate for the 2024 elections.
The campaign criticized the IEA for not engaging or informing the National Democratic Congress (NDC) about the debate plans and accused the institute of bias and ill motives.
In a press statement on Friday, July 19, 2024, Joyce Bawah Mogtari, spokesperson for the Mahama 2024 Campaign, expressed the party’s outrage and concerns about the IEA’s actions.
She said, “It is completely unacceptable that the IEA would make such an announcement without engaging or informing the National Democratic Congress, one of the major political parties in Ghana.”
“The Constitution of Ghana does not grant the IEA any authority to organize elections-related activities. The fact that the IEA has not shown the decency or respect to at least inform the NDC of its plans raises serious questions about its motives.”
According to Bawa Mogtari, the IEA is acting as a front for the NPP and seeking to manipulate the electoral process in favour of the ruling party.
She stressed the NDC’s long-standing engagement with the Ghanaian public and emphasized the party’s commitment to addressing the needs and concerns of the populace.
“Our well-planned engagements with various sectors of society across the country have been and continue to be extremely beneficial to the people of Ghana.”
“We caution the IEA against using the NDC’s name to promote their activities, as this is a blatant attempt to misrepresent our party deliberately,” she warned.
The team assured of the NDC’s dedication to meaningful and respectful engagement with the public, promising to ensure that all voices are heard and needs addressed.
