President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has extended heartfelt condolences and that of the Ghanaian people to the family of former Ghana international Christian Atsu whose lifeless body was recovered under the rubble of his apartment building in Turkey.
The former Newcastle ace had been missing since the 7.8 magnitude earthquake rocked Türkiye almost two weeks ago on 6 February, 2023.
The President, in a tweet, lamented that Ghana has lost one of its finest personnel and ambassadors who will be difficult to replace.
He wrote: “I extend sincere, heartfelt condolences to the widow, children and family of our fellow Ghanaian, Christian Atsu, on the sad news of his death. Ghana football has lost one of its finest personnel and ambassadors, one who will be difficult to replace. He’ll be sorely missed.”
“May his soul rest in the Bosom of the Almighty until the Last Day of the Resurrection when we shall all meet again. Amen!”
The Ghana Embassy in Türkiye confirmed the recovery of his mortal remains Saturday morning
A statement by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said the elder brother and twin sister of Christian Atsu and officers of the Embassy were present at the site when the body was recovered.
The Embassy is currently making the necessary arrangements with the assistance of the Government of Türkiye to have the body transported to Ghana for burial.
