The Minority in Parliament has fingered government in a scandalous plot to clandestinely appropriate the Ameri Power Plant and gift same to cronies and friends.
At the centre of the plot, according to the Caucus, is a surreptitious attempt to transfer the Ameri Plant to Kumasi in the Ashanti Region at a whopping cost of US$35 million.
The Minority disclosed that shocking as the cost may be, another attempt by the government to reintroduce Mytilineos Trading Company into the whole deal stinks to the high heavens.
Mytilineos was the company involved in the infamous Ameri Novation scandal that subsequently led to the dismissal of the then-Minister of Energy Boakye Agyarko.
The government has reportedly directed the Volta River Authority (VRA) to enter into an agreement with Mytilineos for pre-financing and relocation of the Ameri Plant to Kumasi.
Ranking Member of the Mines and Energy Committee and Member of Parliament for Yapei Kasawgu, John Jinapor made this disclosure in an interview in Parliament.
The Ameri Plant was brought into the country by President Dramani Mahama and the NDC government under a Build Own Operate and Transfer (BOOT) agreement.
That agreement has since expired and the Plant has automatically been transferred to the Ghana government.
According to the Ranking Member, contrary to the originally envisaged agreement to transfer the Plant to VRA, the Akufo-Addo/Bawumia government is again using sneaky means to appropriate the Plant to its cronies and friends.
The Minority, he said, is vehemently opposed to the planned arrangement of signing on Mytilineos and also spending US$35 million (approximately GH¢280 million).
“We call on the government as a matter of urgency to transfer that Plant to the Volta River Authority as was originally envisaged. The VRA has the capacity to handle and manager that Plant. This must be done without any inconvenience.”
“We will use every Parliamentary process to ensure that this illegitimate way of trying to appropriate the Ameri Plant to cronies will not be tolerated and we will do everything within our means to ensure we live up to expectation,” he stated.
