Regional Ministers, REGSECs tasked to ramp up fight against galamsey activities

Regional Ministers alongside their Regional Security Councils (REGSEC), have been tasked with ramping up enforcement actions in their jurisdictions to combat illegal mining (galamsey) activities.

This directive follows a meeting between the Minister for Lands and Natural Resources and the Regional Ministers aimed at intensifying the government’s efforts to eliminate the canker through a dual approach of reforms and enforcement.

The Minister, Samuel Abu Jinapor, outlined additional measures to tackle the problem head-on in a renewed commitment to address the persistent issue of galamsey.

A statement issued by the Ministry indicated that as part of the reformative efforts, the Minerals Commission will spearhead the establishment of responsible and legal community mining schemes, which will ensure that small-scale mining is conducted within legal frameworks and with consideration for the protection of the environment.

“Government remains steadfast and committed to continue to restore order and ensure that mining activities are conducted sustainably and legally in the national interest.”

“We entreat all and sundry, to support these efforts to enable us to protect our environment, preserve our water bodies, and ensure a sustainable future for generations to come,” the Ministry said.
