The Minister for Roads and Highway, Kwasi Amoako Atta, has called on the leadership of the various road contractors associations to support the proposed e-levy to accelerate road infrastructure development.
According to him, the revenue generated from the proposed e-levy would help the government build more roads in the country and also pay contractors on time.
“When the e-evy is implemented, the road sector will get its fair share. All contractors owed by the government will be paid.
Many deplorable roads will be fixed when the e-levy is introduced, and all contractors we owe will also be paid. You are going to benefit directly from its implementation. No serious government will joke with its contractors,” the minister noted.
Mr Amoako Attah said this at a meeting held for the leadership of the various road contractors associations in Accra.
He advised all contractors to make sure they go through the classification process – a process of grouping contractors according to their capacities and core competence to work.
He added that the classification process would also help the sector ministry deal with all collusion in the industry.
Mr Amoako-Attah stressed that certificates for classification and reclassifications would be hand-filled henceforth to curb fraudulent issues while awarding contracts.
“I will sign the contracts originally and publish them in the dailies for transparency,” he disclosed.
The National Chairman of the Road Contractors Association, John Afful, in response to the call, said so far as e-levy would contribute to the inflow of money, then he is in support of it.
“Even though I cannot speak on behalf of all contractors, I believe there should be an inflow of money in the system and if the government believes the e-levy should be used then we can go for it,” he noted.
Committee on pre-mixed concrete producers
The event also saw the inauguration of an eight-member committee that would design guidelines to regulate the operation and haulage of pre-mixed concrete in the country.
The members are Francis Ahlidza, Nasir Ahmad Yartey, Ing Benjamin Kusi Adomah, Ing Jonathan Ofosuhene, Ing Akua Anderson, Surv Kwadwo Henry Osei-Asante, Mr Kofi Bawuah and Supt Dr Samuel Sasu-Mensah.
