Sarkodie under fire: Pressure mounts for official apology to Yvonne Nelson and Krobo women

Rap superstar Sarkodie is facing mounting pressure folloiwng a no-show at the Africa Fan Zone at the 2024 Olympic Games in France at the behest of an appeal by New Ghana Social Justice Forum, an advocacy group.

The situation has escalated with a strongly worded press release from Yahaya Alhassan, President of the group.

Alhassan lambasted Sarkodie’s team for what he described as a “comic and baseless attempt to justify the no-performance at the Africa Fan Zone.”

He demanded an immediate apology to actress Yvonne Nelson and the Krobo people, stating that the rapper’s actions and words have failed to live up to the standards expected of public figures.

“Musicians are well adored as stars, and their actions are closely followed by the youth. Therefore, words from these celebrities must be decent, decorous, and in conformity with their status as role models in society,” he said.

The controversy began when Sarkodie was removed from the platform at the Africa Fan Zone in France, an incident that has drawn significant attention.

Alhassan indicated that this should serve as a “learning curve” not just for Sarkodie but for all upcoming musicians and the general public.

The New Ghana organization, which advocates for change and progress in Ghanaian society, has warned that they may be compelled to take further action if the rapper does not issue the officially demanded apologies.

“The world has responded by sending a profound statement for women advocacy, particularly in African communities striving for gender equality and respect for women,” Alhassan said.

He underscored the broader implications of Sarkodie’s actions and the importance of maintaining respect and decorum, especially towards women.

The advocacy group had campaigned for the rap star to be take off a show at the African Fan Zone in France during the Paris 2024 with petitions to the French Embassy in Ghana, organizers of the Olympic Games and the African Fan Zone event.
