The Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Alban Bagbin is one of the over 8 million people in the country whose SIM Cards have been deactivated.
This has been confirmed by the Member of Parliament (MP) for Ningo Prampram, Samuel Nartey George.
Speaking on the floor of Parliament on Tuesday, June 6, the MP expressed his displeasure, revealing that his SIM Card has also been deactivated.
“In fact, we should have had this briefing today because we are talking about over 8 million SIM Cards that have been disconnected including even the SIM Card of the Speaker of Parliament. Not the deputy but the Speaker of Parliament himself. His official SIM Card was disconnected even though it was registered in the name of the Parliament of Ghana.
“Even me, my SIM Card was disconnected. The National Identification Authority must provide us with Ghana Cards. It is important that the Minister briefs this house even if possible today because people’s livelihoods have been affected,” Sam George stressed.
The Minister of Communications, Ursula Owusu-Ekuful is expected to report to Parliament on Thursday, June 8, to update the house on the SIM Card re-registration exercise.
On June 1, all persons who failed to re-register their SIM Cards with the Ghana Card had their numbers deactivated.
Since then, there has been a mad rush by the affected persons to go through the necessary registration processes.
