Mixed reactions on Bawumia’s promise to reduce cost of living

Some residents of Ashaiman have expressed varied views on Dr. Mahamadu Bawumia, the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) flagbearer’s announced plan to reduce the cost of living, as contained in the recent out-door election 2024 manifesto.

Madam Vida Owusu, a hairdresser speaking with the Ghana News Agency, expressed doubts about the promise, stating that the party has been in power for eight years, during which the cost of living has continuously risen.

Madam Owusu emphasised that the NPP’s record on economic management has been disappointing, with the party failing to address the root causes of the high cost of living.

She called on the party to provide a detailed explanation of how they plan to reduce the cost of living without compromising economic growth.

Ms. Mary Adu, a trader, stressed the need for concrete actions rather than just words, saying the high cost of living has impacted negatively on businesses, making it difficult to make ends meet.

She urged the NPP flagbearer to provide a clear plan of action to address the issue, including specific measures to reduce the cost of necessities as well as transparency in the implementation of the plan.

Mr. Inusah Ahmed, a shopkeeper, expressed his unwavering support for the manifesto, stating that Dr. Bawumia is a capable leader who could deliver on his promises.

He believes that the NPP flagbearer’s vision for the country is achievable and will bring much-needed relief from the current economic challenges.

Ms. Fati Tahiru, a trader, said the manifesto’s promises on roads, jobs, and the cost of living are nothing new, noting that it was an old promise that was not implemented.

“This manifesto is full of empty promises; it’s a repeat of the same old story we’ve heard before with no concrete plan,” she added.

She expressed disappointment and frustration with the lack of original thought and tangible plans, saying that the NPP flagbearer seems not to be aware of the realities the ordinary citizen faces.
