Speaker Bagbin acknowledges Suma Traditional Area for chieftaincy title: A recognition of Parliament’s commitment to democracy

Speaker of Parliament, Rt Hon. Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, was installed as a Chief of the Suma Traditional Area in the Bono Region.

The installation, conducted under the auspices of Paramount Chief Odeneho Dr. Afram Brempong III, signifies a profound acknowledgment of Parliament as a key institution championing Ghana’s democracy.

During a session of the House on Monday, November 27th, 2024, Speaker Alban Bagbin shared the news with his colleagues, revealing the significance of the honor bestowed upon him.

He stated, “This installation is in honour of the institution of Parliament and recognizes the collective efforts of the Speaker and all members in advancing the values, norms, traditions, and principles of the Ghanaian people.”

The Speaker, now bearing the stool name Nana Adasuoko I, expressed his gratitude to the Suma Traditional Area for the esteemed recognition.

He assured that Parliament and its members would remain dedicated to fulfilling the trust placed in them by the Suma community.

Speaker Bagbin also announced a generous gesture from Odeneho Dr. Afram Brempong III, who has allocated land for the construction of the Institute of Parliamentary Studies.

He urged the House to embrace this gift and establish a campus in Suma, dedicated to educating young people on the principles and importance of Ghana’s democracy.

Reflecting on the significance of the installation, Speaker Bagbin emphasized, “This honor extends beyond me; it is a recognition of the tireless work of Parliament in upholding the democratic ideals of our nation.”

Deputy Minority Whip, Ahmed Ibrahim, who attended the ceremony in support of the Speaker, expressed his gratitude for the coronation.

He stated, “This honor to the Speaker will serve as a source of motivation for young and upcoming politicians to emulate his exemplary virtues, contributing to the character development of Ghana’s political landscape.”

Majority Leader Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu commended the Suma Traditional Area for acknowledging the pivotal role of Parliament in the governance architecture of the country.

He remarked, “The recognition from another part of the country, not just from our own backyard, underscores the significance of Parliament’s contributions.”

Looking ahead, the Majority Leader proposed that Parliament organize a short ceremony to officially welcome Speaker Bagbin to the House, celebrating this prestigious recognition that highlights the crucial role of the legislature in the nation’s governance.
