Speaker warns of ‘national crisis,’ urges collaborative action for credible 2024 elections

Speaker of Parliament Alban S.K. Bagbin has raised concerns about the nation’s current state, warning that the prevailing signs and signals do not convey hope and assurance.

He called for immediate action to avert a potential calamity, especially as the country approaches the 2024 elections.

In his opening remarks on Tuesday, June 11, 2024, marking the first sitting of the third meeting of Parliament, Bagbin stressed the pressing issues of joblessness, homelessness, and the resulting hopelessness among the youth.

He emphasized that these challenges can no longer be ignored.

“The joblessness, homelessness, and hopelessness of the youth cannot be taken lightly any longer, especially as the country draws closer to the 2024 elections,” Bagbin stated.

Acknowledging the significant work ahead, the Speaker stressed the need for collaboration among various national bodies to create a fair and conducive environment for the upcoming elections.

He proposed a proactive engagement with key institutions such as the Electoral Commission, Media Commission, Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice, and the National Commission on Civic Education.

“I have thought it wise to initiate an engagement with the Chairpersons of the Electoral Commission, Media Commission, Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice, and the National Commission on Civic Education to discuss how Parliament could collaborate and work with them to create the right and just environment for free, fair, peaceful, and credible elections.”

“This, I believe, will inspire confidence in the process and faith in our democratic institutions,” Bagbin said.

The Speaker also stressed that this collaborative effort will extend beyond these bodies.

He called for the active involvement of a broader range of stakeholders, including the President, Council of State, National Security Council, flag bearers and national executives of political parties, security services, particularly the police, clergy, and notable civil society leaders.

“We will not be doing this alone, we will actively involve everyone,” he assured.

The Speaker urged members to prioritize their work to avoid a looming crisis and ensure the integrity of the electoral process through united and decisive action.
