Sri Lanka’s President, Gotabaya Rajapaksa, has announced his resignation following protests that led to demonstrators storming his official residence and setting the prime minister’s house on fire.
Reports indicate that none of the occupants of the affected houses were in the building at the time of the incident.
Sri Lankans have been on the neck of their president to resign after months of protests over what they say is a mismanagement of the country’s economic crisis.
The BBC reports that Prime Minister Wickremesinghe has said Mr. Rajapaksa has agreed to step down on 13 July to ensure “a peaceful transition”.
The President’s announcement comes after thousands of protesters earlier stormed President Gotabaya Rajapaksa’s official residence in the capital Colombo.
