Suhum MP Kwadjo Asante mulls going independent after NPP primary defeat

The current Member of Parliament (MP) for Suhum is reportedly considering running as an independent candidate in the 2024 general election.

Kwadjo Asante lost the New Patriotic Party (NPP) primary to Frank Asiedu Bekoe, popularly known as Protozoa.

An aide to NPP presidential candidate Mahamudu Bawumia, Kofi Tonto, has acknowledged that Asante’s potential independent bid presents a challenge for the party, given Suhum’s status as a traditional NPP stronghold.

He explained, “We do have a small challenge in Suhum because the current MP, who lost the primary to Protozoa, wants to contest as an independent.”

During an interview on the Asaase Breakfast Show on Monday, 12 August, he revealed that efforts are underway to persuade Asante to remain within the party.

Bryan Acheampong, the MP for Abetifi, is leading the initiative to re-engage Asante and secure his support for the upcoming election.

“Discussions are ongoing to bring him back to the fold. Honourable Bryan Acheampong is leading that charge to work with him to bring him back.”

“I think we’ve made great gains in terms of engagement with him, and we hope that he will come on board to solidify our base as we forge ahead,” Tonto added.

The Suhum MP sought re-election in the NPP primary but lost to Frank Asiedu Bekoe, who secured 496 votes compared to his 320 votes.
