THE HEAVENS DECLARE GOD’S GLORY

Scripture Reading: Psalm 19:1-6

The heavens declare the glory of God; And the firmament shows His handiwork. 2 Day unto day utters speech, And night unto night reveals knowledge. (Psalm 19:1-2)

Psalm 19 is a glorious Psalm that shows us that God created all things to make Himself known. The Psalm gives life and voice to things we usually recognize as inanimate, such as the heavens and the firmaments. These objects “declare,” “show,” and “utter speech” in praise of their Creator. The psalm establishes that:

  1. Creation reveals God to us. The majesty we see in the universe is a reflection of the majesty of the Creator. When we see order, intelligence, purpose and beauty in nature, they show us various attributes of God.

When we see order in creation, it is because God is orderly. When we see intelligence in creation, it is because God is wise. In the daytime, the brightness of the sun shows us the brightness of God’s glory. In the nighttime, the light of the moon and stars remind us of the light of God that pierces through darkness.

  1. Creation never stops glorifying God. The Psalm shows the continuously ongoing nature of the proclamation made by the heavens. It is a never-ending outpouring of glory to God from the moment of creation until now and on into the future.

I’m always awed when I stand at the beach to watch the waves of the Atlantic Ocean come in and go. They continue day and night, year after year in an unceasing rhythm, giving witness to the God’s unfailing grace.

As creation proclaims the glory of God, so should we. Day and night our hearts must pour forth gratitude to the Lord. As creation endlessly proclaims God’s majesty, so must we. Our voices must daily announce the goodness of the Lord.

Prayer: Heavenly Father, day and night, your creation reveals your wisdom. Help me to also glorify you at all times. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
