THE KING ETERNAL, IMMORTAL
Scripture Reading: 1 Timothy 1
Now to the King eternal, immortal, invisible, to God who alone is wise, be honor and glory forever and ever. Amen. 1 Timothy 1:17
This is a doxology – a hymn of praise to God. The New Testament, records accounts of the pattern of worship of the early church and we find these hymns of praise featuring as part of their worship.
The hymn speaks of God’s nature and what is due Him. Five statements are made about God’s nature:
1. God is King. He is the Ruler of the Universe. He is the ruler of the heavens and the earth. God is the ultimate Authority in every realm. His word is law and His power is majestic.
2. God is Eternal. He has no beginning and no end. God is not bound by time as human beings are. Because we are able to see and appreciate the beginning and the end of a thing, we struggle to fathom anything with no beginning or end. But God lives in eternity; He is neither early nor late. He is never too late to accomplish His purposes.
3. God is Immortal. He lives forever. God has never died nor will He ever. He always is and will forever be. That is comforting, because the people we depend on may not always be with us. Some people do not even have anyone to depend on. But God will always be with those who put their trust in Him.
4. God is invisible. He cannot be seen naturally but He is real. Have you ever wished that God would show himself to you so you would believe Him? Many long for that experience. But though He may not show himself to us as we desire, He is with us. The Israelites saw the mighty works of God and still doubted Him. Our faith must not necessarily rest on physical signs but in the fact of the existence of an unseen God.
5. God is the only wise One. He knows far more than anyone or anything else. God is superior in wisdom above all the wisdom that could be gathered in all the earth. No created being nor invented thing will ever measure to God’s wisdom. He is the only wise God.
Two statements are made about what is due to God. Because of all of these glorious attributes that were afore mentioned, we must:
• Give God honour. We must give Him the highest value. In our hearts and in our eyes, we must place great premium on God. The honour we give the people we respect and the things we cherish must not compete with our value and estimate of God. He deserves all the honour.
• Give God glory. We must give Him the highest acclaim and accolades. He is above all, therefore we must worship Him unreservedly with our words. We must proclaim that He is good, He is mighty and He is awesome. We must give Him glory and honour for who He is and who He has become unto us. He deserves all the glory.
Prayer: Heaven Father, you are the King Eternal, Immortal, Invisible and the only wise God. I give you honour and glory forever. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
