THE LORD, HE’S GOD

Scripture Reading: 1 Kings 18:30-39

Then the fire of the Lord fell and consumed the burnt sacrifice, and the wood and the stones and the dust, and it licked up the water that was in the trench. Now when all the people saw it, they fell on their faces; and they said, “The Lord, He is God! The Lord, He is God!” (1 Kings 18:38-39)

Under the reign of King Ahab, Israel turned away from the Lord. Ahab married a woman of Sidon called Jezebel. This was a political marriage designed to unite Sidon and Israel. As a worshipper of Baal, Jezebel persuaded Ahab to also worship her god and promote that cult amongst God’s people.

To entrench the worship of their god, Ahab and Jezebel killed, persecuted and corrupted God’s priests and prophets. Baal worship became preeminent in Israel. It was in this state of apostasy that God raised Elijah as prophet to Israel.

Elijah’s ministry was confrontational. He challenged king Ahab and the idolatry in Israel. He spoke among the people of Israel to call them to order and the worship of the one true God. But who was the one true God?

On Mount Carmel, God demonstrated His power to Israel when He answered Elijah’s prayer with fire. The contest was set; a sacrifice was laid on an altar by the prophets of Baal. They prayed to their god to send fire to consume it, but there was no answer. After Elijah prepared his sacrifice and prayed, fire fell from heaven and consumed it.

The people fell on their faces after this spectacular sight and proclaimed, ‘The Lord, He is God’ repeatedly.

What happened on Mount Carmel will happen again. Every knee shall bow and every tongue shall confess that Jesus is Lord. One day all the powers of the earth will proclaim the Lordship of Christ.

Over the earth, He is God.
Over nature and all creation, He is God.
Over every power and authority among men, He is God.
Over every god, idol and evil, spiritual power, He is God.

Whatever force that has lifted itself against you, know that the Lord, He is God.

Prayer: Heavenly Father, there is none like you; and none besides you. We bow to you and declare your power over all things. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
