Trouble in judicial service not a lack of leadership – Justice Torkornoo

The nominee for Chief Justice of Ghana, Justice Gertrude Araba Esaaba Torkornoo, has stated the current upheaval in the judicial service is not a sign of a lack of leadership.

She argued that the presence of trouble in any part of the judicial administration of the justice sector is not indicative of a lack of leadership.

The Judiciary, she said has had very great leaders throughout its existence who have left very great legacies that continue to impact the effectiveness of the Judiciary.

Justice Gertrude Torkornoo was speaking at her vetting as nominee for the position of Chief Justice by the Appointments Committee of Parliament on Friday 26th May 2023.

A member of the Committee and MP for Madina, Francis-Xavier Kojo Sosu, had questioned how the nominee is going to deal with the leadership of the Judiciary because of the many situations going on.

He stated that the entire administration of justice from the ongoing strike action by the Judicial Service Staff Association of Ghana (JUSAG) and the issues with the law school admission, and examination malpractices point to a lack of leadership.

“What is going to be your strategic goals to turn around the situation with the administration of justice in Ghana,” he quizzed.

The Nominee, however, pointed out that the judiciary is a human institution and may experience some of these situations but that is not a sign of a lack of leadership.

According to her, the JUSAG strike is under control and indicated a series of meetings have been held with members of JUSAG to ensure an amicable solution is arrived at.

“We’re one family and we’ve had meetings with them and I believe that very soon we will see the court doors open.”

Justice Torkornoo explained that the specific issue driving the strike is the review of the salaries of the judicial staff.

She stated that there is a structure for the review of salaries on a biannual basis, which the staff believes is moving too slowly but assured that process has started already.
