The University Teachers Association of Ghana (UG-UTAG) has vehemently rejected recent allegations made by the National Security Minister, Albert Kan-Dapaah, implicating members of academia, civil society, and the media in a supposed plot to incite a coup in Ghana.
In an official statement, UG-UTAG President, Prof. Ransford E. V. Gyampo, expressed grave concern and condemned the Minister’s comments, stressing the association’s unwavering commitment to free speech and democratic values.
“We won’t be gagged from speaking our minds forcefully on all important national issues,” Prof. Gyampo stated.
“Any attempt to stifle our voices, including political commentary, will be fiercely resisted. We stand against any moves that could lead us back into the dark days of a culture of silence.”
The National Security Minister’s accusations, which lacked substantiated evidence, were met with strong opposition from UG-UTAG.
The association highlighted the potential consequences of such statements, emphasizing the danger of curtailing dissenting opinions and hindering the exercise of fundamental rights to free speech.
“We do not support any calls for a coup in Ghana, but we urge the government to recognize that the antidote to coups lies in good governance, fighting corruption, and implementing pro-poor policies.”
“Building a strong Middle Class and bridging the wealth gap are crucial steps toward ensuring political stability in our nation,” Prof. Gyampo asserted.
UG-UTAG called on the government to focus on these antidotes to promote peace and stability in Ghana.
The Association urged for a national dialogue, emphasizing the need for collective efforts to guard against coup threats and protect the peace that Ghana has long enjoyed.
“We call for a national conversation to safeguard our peace, respecting diverse opinions while upholding our democratic principles. Together, we can build a stronger, more resilient Ghana,” the statement added.
