Gunmen attack travelers in Bawku, kill one and injure several others

Unknown gunmen attacked a bus carrying travellers, mostly women, in Bawku on Monday, January 6, 2025.

The bus, which was under security escort, was travelling from Bolgatanga to Bawku when the assailants ambushed it, opening fire.

The attack resulted in the death of one passenger, identified as Nuaima Awudu, a young trader who had travelled to Bolgatanga for her business.

Several others sustained injuries and are currently receiving treatment at the Bawku Presbyterian Hospital.

The assault follows another incident on Sunday, January 5, in which a resident was killed while attempting to move to a different part of the town. These incidents have disrupted the fragile calm that had returned to Bawku in recent weeks.

Residents in Bawku are living in fear, confined to their respective communities to avoid violence. Travelling outside one’s immediate area has become increasingly dangerous, as individuals risk being targeted.

Despite the imposition of a dawn-to-dusk curfew in November 2024, which aimed to restore order, the security situation remains volatile. Authorities are yet to identify the attackers or provide updates on efforts to curb the violence.

The recurring violence in Bawku continues to raise concerns about the effectiveness of security measures in the area and the need for lasting solutions to ensure the safety of residents and travellers alike.
