Three suspects who were being held by police in Tongo in the Talensi District of the Upper East Region have escaped from lawful custody.
The suspects identified as Francis Dabang, Kojo Dinaya and a juvenile remand prisoner (name withheld); broke out of the cell on Sunday (15 May) at about 19hours.
The suspects were being held in the cell for various crimes including defilement and stealing.
According to Asaase News sources, the suspects broke through the wall of a bathroom in the cell and got away on the blind side of three police officers who were on duty.
Sources said the suspects took advantage of a wall of the cell which had been dampened by the rains.
A fourth cellmate, however, did not take part in the escape and is currently assisting the police with investigations.
A manhunt for the cell breakers has since been launched. Police personnel have been deployed to track down the suspects.
However, the Upper East Regional Police Command is yet to make an official statement on the incident.
