USAIN BOLT laid bare his views on Meghan Markle and Prince Harry relationship in a throwback interview, saying everyone is “happy” for them and that Meghan is a “nice girl” but expressing disappointment that he never got to “party” with Harry before he settled down.
The Jamaican sprint champion, 35, is one of the guests on ‘The Jonathan Ross Show’ on ITV tonight. The world’s fastest man is joined by a stellar cast of guests for the popular talk show, including national treasure Joanna Lumley. Jonathan will also welcome Jamie Dornan, Shalom Brune-Franklin and Holly Willoughby to his studio. Meanwhile, Blur and Gorillaz frontman Damon Albarn will perform as he prepares to wrap up his UK tour.
Bolt has been no stranger to rubbing shoulders with celebrities during his glittering athletics career.
The world record holder in the 100 metres, 200 metres, and 4×100 metres relay once even met the Duke and Duchess of Sussex ‒ and the eight-time Olympic gold medal-winner gave Meghan and Harry his stamp of approval.
Bolt offered thoughts on the Sussexes’ relationship in 2017 as he spoke to Hello! Magazine.
He said: “I think everybody is happy because he’s always the wild one of the Royal Family, but he’s really cool.
“I’m sorry I didn’t get to party with him before. She’s definitely a nice girl.”
The sprinter was speaking at the GH Mumm Champagne Kentucky Derby celebration in New York City.
He recalled his memories of catching up with Harry earlier in the year when the Sussexes were in Jamaica.
Harry and Meghan, who was then still his girlfriend, jetted into the Caribbean island for the wedding of his friend Tom ‘Skippy’ Inskip.
Harry met Tom, who was tying the knot with Lara Hughes-Young, when the pair were students at Eton.
At the wedding, the Sussexes were still a new couple themselves, having only started dating the previous summer.
Harry and Bolt previously met in Jamaica in 2012 as the royal visited the country to mark the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee.
The pair engaged in a race, which Bolt said should have been re-run because Harry “cheated”.
The sprinter was granted his request four years later as Harry challenged the star to a rematch as he wished him happy birthday.
In a tweet he said: “Congratulations Usain Bolt – now you’re officially the greatest you might be ready for a re-run! Happy 30th.”
His message came after Bolt bagged his latest gold medal at the Rio Olympic Games in 2016.
The athlete told Hello! he was prepared after Harry threw down the gauntlet.
He said: “I’m ready! I’m ready because he got away last time.
“There was a lot written saying I got beaten, so I can’t live that down.”
He added: “He cheated! They said, ‘On your mark, [get] set’ and he just ran off.”
