OneGhana Movement, a civil society group, has condemned the acts of vandalism and disorder that marred the ministerial vetting process in Parliament on Thursday, January 30, 2025.
In a statement signed by its Director, Senyo K. Hosi, the group described the actions of some vetting committee members as an “undignified and blatant affront to the nation’s democratic values.”
The organization emphasized ministerial vetting is a constitutional requirement meant to ensure transparency, accountability, and the selection of competent individuals for public office.
However, the chaos witnessed during the proceedings, particularly actions led by members of the Minority, undermined these principles.
“The conduct of certain committee members not only tarnished Ghana’s democratic image but also eroded public trust in state institutions.”
“Such reckless actions represent a waste of national resources and a disregard for the very citizens who entrusted these officials with power,” the statement said.
OneGhana Movement urged the Speaker of Parliament, parliamentary leadership, and the Chairman of the Vetting Committee to take decisive action in restoring order and discipline to the process. The group insisted that such critical national exercises must reflect the integrity expected of Ghana’s lawmakers.
“We call on the leadership of Parliament to uphold order and discipline to ensure that the sanctity of this democratic process is preserved,” the statement said.
The movement also called on the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) and the Attorney-General to launch an immediate investigation into the destruction of state property during the scuffle. It urged authorities to arrest and prosecute those responsible, stressing that no one should be above the law.
“This will serve as the requisite deterrence for future attacks on state institutions by public officers elected to serve, not to destroy,” it added.
OneGhana Movement appealed to all parliamentarians to uphold the highest standards of leadership and accountability stating, “We urge all MPs to demonstrate respect for the people they serve and uphold the democratic principles that guide our nation,” Senyo K. Hosi stated.
The events of the past week have intensified scrutiny on Ghana’s parliamentary processes, with civil society and the public demanding greater discipline and responsibility from lawmakers.
