Minister of the Interior, Ambrose Dery, has given assurance the security services will ensure the status quo in Bawku would be respected and that no lawlessness would be tolerated.
He indicated there is currently heavy deployment in the town but noted since that will not be enough, the Peace Council is also on the ground engaging stakeholders to bring down the tension rising from the deployment.
Mr. Ambrose Dery disclosed these in Parliament on Wednesday after Minority leader Haruna Iddrisu had raised an alarm on the worsening security situation in Bawku and the need for prompt action.
The Minority indicated he had visited the town and is not pleased with the security situation and warned the situation could get worse if the state does address the mounting insecurity sooner than later.
The Interior Minister disclosed the situation developed out of a simple suspicion that led to both military and police deployment.
He said, “When we did that it was a simple deployment until we were shocked by some occurrences that weren’t easily understood.”
“It didn’t involve the major stakeholders but in view of the fact that it’s near a border where you will have extremists activities being close, the last time about 20 kilometres, there was re-enforcement.”
“Hon. Minority leader, if you went there you would also have seen the heavy armour that has been deployed.”
He assured the state is conscious of the development in Bawku and has eyes keenly following the situation to ensure it does not deteriorate.
