The Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo-led government’s unprecedented achievements in the Savannah Region have been celebrated by the chiefs, elders, and residents of Dagbon.
On Monday, October 14, 2024, a grand durbar was held in Damongo, led by Yagbonwura Bikunuto Jewu Soale I, to honour the immense impact President Akufo-Addo has had on the region. The president was in the area as part of his farewell tour.
In his address, Yagbonwura Bikunuto Jewu expressed the heartfelt gratitude of the people of Dagbon for the profound changes experienced during President Akufo-Addo’s tenure. He credited the president with the creation of the Savannah Region and the resolution of long-standing chieftaincy disputes, securing a lasting place for him in Gonja history.
Yagbonwura noted the substantial development the region has witnessed, touching all aspects of life, including education, healthcare, agriculture, and infrastructure.
“We are deeply grateful for your dedication in creating the Savannah Region. This monumental decision has led to significant progress in key areas like education, healthcare, agriculture, and roads. The people of Gonjaland have been elevated, and we remain eternally thankful,” Yagbonwura stated.
President Akufo-Addo, in response, expressed his gratitude to the people of Gonjaland and all Ghanaians for their support during his presidency. Reflecting on his administration’s work in Dagbon, he emphasized the partnerships that helped him achieve two major milestones: bringing peace to the region and creating the Savannah Region.
He thanked Yagbonwura, alongside the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, and Nayiri Naa Bohagu Mahami Abdulai Sheriga, for their roles in securing peace in Dagbon. He also highlighted the cooperation that led to the successful creation of the Savannah Region, fulfilling a long-held desire of the people of Gonjaland.
“When I assumed office, I received a petition from Gonjaland for their own region—a demand made for many years. With the support of your predecessor, we made the Savannah Region a reality, and for that, I will forever be grateful to the Jakpa stool,” President Akufo-Addo said.
Hon. Samuel A. Jinapor, MP for Damongo, praised President Akufo-Addo’s work in the region, describing his achievements as unparalleled. He emphasized that the creation of the Savannah Region, which the people of Gonjaland had sought since the 19th century, cemented President Akufo-Addo’s legacy.
“Mr. President, your achievements are unmatched. You have liberated Gonjaland by granting us our region. In addition to this, you have brought development in every aspect of life, including education, healthcare, agriculture, and infrastructure. Your legacy in the Savannah Region is unparalleled,” Jinapor said.
