Zoomlion Ghana Limited has made a passionate call to the government to continue to support the company to actualize the waste management infrastructure initiative.
According to the company, the construction of the Integrated Recycling and Compost Plants (IRECOP) across the 16 regions of the country is such a huge project that would not be possible without the unflinching support of the Ghana government.
Senior Communications Officer of Zoomlion, Mr. Adams Mohammed Mahama made the call while addressing members of the Parliamentary Press Corps (PPC) in Kumasi on Friday after a tour of seven of these waste management facilities in seven regions.
Mr. Adams Mahama stated the wonderful aspect of the initiative is the projects are not concentrated in big cities like Accra, Kumasi or Tamale.
“When we took you around you saw that even the new regions are all benefiting from this initiative. So we are calling on the government to continue to help and support us as they have done all over the years to ensure such projects are completed and more come on board.”
“We have a lot of projects that we are bringing next year.”
“We thank the government so much for the support but we are not done yet and so we are pleading for more to accomplish these projects.”
The team toured the Ho, Dambai, Tamale, Sagnarigu, Damongo, Sunyani, Goasu and Kumasi IRECOP sites to see the progress of work.
Most of the facilities visited are over 80% complete and gearing to go into operation recycling waste materials from these areas and the regions as a whole except the Kumasi facility, which began operation in 2020.
These waste management facilities are equipped to process not only solid waste, but some have units for processing medical and liquid waste like the Ho, Tamale and Kumasi plants for example.
The IRECOP is a collaborative initiative between Zoomlion and the government where waste management facilities will be constructed in all 16 regions to ensure waste generated is recycled for other uses or at least treated before going to landfill sites.
This forms part of efforts to ensure the country has a sustainable waste management system to keep the country clean.
President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo in his State of the Nation Address in 2021 promised to establish 16 recycling plants and 14 medical waste treatment facilities across the country.
Mr. Adam Mahama noted that the introduction of the Electronic Transaction Levy (E-Levy) is an additional source of government funding to service waste management in the country.
He averred that sustainable funds will help the company to complete these waste facilities on time and ensure the country rid itself of the filth engulfing the country.
According to him, the plants being installed at the various facilities are similar to those being used in Europe or the United States and stressed that in time, the dream to have a very clean country will be achieved.
