National Communications Officer for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Sammy Gyamfi, has questioned the relevance of the lecture on Ghana’s digital economy delivered by the Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia on Tuesday, November 3.

Sammy Gyamfi in a Facebook post questioned the need for the Lecture when pertinent national issues remain unresolved.

“Of what use is ‘E-this and E-that’ to the ordinary Ghanaian who is jobless and cannot even afford to buy mobile data to access these digital platforms?” he asked.

At the Lecture, which took place at the Ashesi University, the Vice President, among other things, announced that government will launch an E-Pharmacy project to address challenges faced by members of the public in accessing medicines.

He explained that the project has become necessary since many patients spend long hours searching for pharmacies where they can obtain prescribed medications, sometimes at very expensive prices.

Thus, the Pharmacy Council, in collaboration with the private sector, has been challenged to digitize the operations of pharmacies in Ghana.

But Sammy Gyamfi has decried the initiative. “Of what use is E-Pharmacy to the ordinary Ghanaian who is reeling under excruciating economic hardships as a result of the introduction of excessive taxes and steep increases in fuel prices by the Akufo-Addo/Bawumia government?

“Digitalization is good. It helps people to do things effectively with ease. The NDC/Mahama administration has a superior record in that regard. But digitalization is useless unless it is linked to the economic empowerment of the people,” Mr Gyamfi contended.

He reiterated calls to the government to focus on addressing the pertinent needs of Ghanaians.

“Ghana’s economy is currently in tatters due to the crass economic mismanagement of the Akufo-Addo/Bawumia government. Our ever-rising Public Debt has reached an alarmingly unsustainable level. The rate of unemployment is on the rise and cost of living has become unbearable for the vast majority of Ghanaians. “kromAyeshe” and Ghanaians are suffering.

“The answer to these problems doesn’t lie in the organization of lectures on digitalization. ‘Dr. Bawuliar’ should sit up, stop peddling falsehood and fix our broken economy. That’s what Ghanaians expect from him as Head of the Economic Management Team of government,” he added.
