The Ashanti Caucus in Parliament has hinted at plans to meet President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to draw his attention to the many uncompleted projects in the region and measures being put in place for their completion.

The planned meeting follows attacks on Member of Parliament for Suame in the Ashanti Region Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu by his constituents last week.

The Majority leader was pelted with stones and sachet water by artisans at the Suame Magazine and the youth during his tour of the constituency to inspect various road projects and had to be whisked away by security personnel.

The attack has, however, prompted the government to present a loan facility to Parliament for approval for the completion of the Saume project.

According to the Caucus, though the Akufo-Addo-led NPP government has undertaken lots of projects in the region, many more have not been completed and while some are ongoing, others have been abandoned.

Briefing the media in Parliament on Thursday, July 21, 2022, the Spokesperson of the group, Hon. Kwame Anyimadu-Antwi, MP for Asante Akim Central, urged constituents in the Ashanti Region to exercise restraints as members engage the government.

According to him, some of the Constituencies have indeed very bad roads and cited Kwabre East, Bantama, Manso Adobea, Kwadaso and Ashanti Akim Central among many others as examples.

“There are three issues that we have planned to actually meet the leadership of the government to discuss and these are roads, Infrastructure for Poverty Eradication Program (IPEP) projects and all the projects under the Middle Belt Development Authority.”

“We believe that if these projects are completed our constituencies would have confidence in the government.”

Hon. Anyimadu-Antwi said they have heard the complaints of the constituents, especially those claiming ‘they have regretted voting for the NPP’ to give the government time to address their problems.

The MPs, he said, are not unconcerned about the situation but stressed the unfortunate Suame incident should not be the way to address the situation.

He argued the Ashanti Parliamentarians can only do as much because development projects are initiated and carried out by the government.

He disclosed Parliament on Wednesday approved a loan facility to actually undertake some of these projects including dualization of the Konongo-Ejisu road among many others.

He assured that many roads in the Ashanti Region would soon be constructed but argued it is not because people demonstrated and threw stones and sachet water at their leaders.

Members of the Caucus, he said, would visit their various constituencies in August when the House goes on recess to address all outstanding issues.
