At least two public office holders in the former New Patriotic Party (NPP) administration were arrested over the weekend by operatives of the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB) in connection with the botched $2 million sky train deal.

The former Chairman of the Public Procurement Authority board, Prof Christopher Ameyaw-Akumfi, was taken into custody by the NIB at Kawukudi, near Nima in the Greater Accra Region.

Prof Ameyaw-Akumfi, who previously served as Minister of Education, was reportedly apprehended by NIB officials, but no official statement has been released regarding the reasons for his arrest.

In response to the situation, his legal team swiftly moved into action to secure his release.

As at press time yesterday, members of his legal team were stationed at the NIB offices in Kawukudi, actively negotiating for bail.

Their efforts are focused on ensuring that the former minister is granted bail while any necessary legal processes are followed.

Also, the former Deputy Director of Operations at the National Service Authority (NSA), Kwaku Ohene Gyan, popularly known as Osonoba, was also detained by the NIB

He was allegedly picked up on Saturday evening and is currently being held at the NIB offices in Kawukudi.

While the reasons for his detention remain unclear, his lawyers are expected to meet with him to discuss the situation and explore possible legal options for his release.

It is also uncertain whether his arrest is linked to the recent scandal at the NSA.

As though that is not enough, the Bono Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Kwame Baffoe, popularly known as Abronye DC has been detained by the police.

He has been charged on two counts of publication of false news and offensive conduct conducive to breaches of the peace.

Baffoe had alleged on radio that Former President John Dramani Mahama was involved in a coup plot.

The police after hearing about the comment invited him to report to the Accra Regional Police Command by 4 on Tuesday [Feb 15, 2022, but by 2 pm, Baffoe was at the police station.

A press statement dated Tuesday [Feb 15, 2022] signed and issued by the Public Affairs Officer of the Accra Regional Police, DSP Juliana Obeng said: “preliminary investigation has established that his claims against former President [Mahama] are untrue and likely to occasion a breach of the peace.”

“In view of this, he [Baffoe] has been formally arrested and charged on two counts of publication of false news and offensive conduct conducive to breaches of the peace.”

The police said has been detained and will be arraigned on Wednesday, February 16, 2022.

“We urge the public to be circumspect in all their dealings including pronouncements since anyone who falls fouls of the law will be taken through the due process of the law”

Baffoe is said to have made the allegation in a radio interview with Accra-based radio Hot FM during a political talk show, “Dwene Ho Bio.”

He is said to have claimed that former President John Mahama had met with the Al Qaeda militants in an attempt to stage a coup in Ghana.

According to him, Mr Mahama is in ties with the group to help him undertake a coup to become president again.

Baffoe was responding to issues leading to the arrest of convenor of the FixTheCountry Movement, Oliver Mawuse Barker-Vormawor, who had also made claims of staging a coup should the controversial E-Levy be passed by parliament.
