In a bid to promote the sustainability and growth of the automobile industry in Ghana, the Automobile Assemblers Association of Ghana, has called upon the government, particularly the Ministries of Finance and Trade and Industry, to expedite the implementation of key policies outlined in the Ghana Automotive Development Policy.
Speaking at the inaugural Ghana Automotive Summit, the President of the Automobile Assemblers Association of Ghana, Jeffery Oppong Peprah, emphasized the significant progress made in the local production of vehicles since 2022.
According to him, Ghana witnessed a notable increase in local vehicle production, with the total number of units reaching 4,700. This accounted for an impressive 9.6% share of the country’s new car market.
Encouraged by these figures, Mr. Peprah expressed confidence that, with full implementation of the Ghana Automotive Development Policy, these numbers could experience substantial growth by the year 2027.
Central to the association’s appeal is the urgent need for the government to enforce certain policies that would facilitate the sustainability of the automobile industry in Ghana.
Chief among these is the complete ban on the sale of used vehicles within the country. Mr. Peprah argued that such a ban would not only incentivize the purchase of locally produced vehicles but would also drive investment and job creation within the sector.
Additionally, he stressed the importance of prohibiting the sale of salvaged vehicles, citing safety concerns and the need to uphold high standards within the industry.
“The implementation of the Ghana Automotive Development Policy is crucial for the long-term viability and growth of our automobile industry,” stated Mr. Peprah.
“By banning the sale of used vehicles and salvaged vehicles, we will create a more level playing field that will drive demand for locally manufactured cars, promote technological advancements, and foster economic development.”
He called upon the Ministries of Finance and Trade and Industry to collaborate closely with industry stakeholders to ensure the timely and effective implementation of the required policies.
In response to these appeals, Minister of Trade and Industries, Kobina Tahir Hammond, expressed the government’s commitment to creating a supportive environment for the industry.
About the Ghana Automotive Summit 2023
The inaugural Automotive Summit, hosted by the Automobile Assemblers Association of Ghana (AAAG), took place on June 27, 2023, at the Accra International Conference Centre (AICC) Grand Arena.
Under the theme, “Creating A New Economic Backbone for Ghana and The Sub-Region,” the summit provided a platform for leading experts and industry professionals to engage in discussions regarding the latest trends, challenges, and opportunities in the automobile industry.
The summit received support from notable organizations, including the Africa Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) Secretariat, Ghana Investment Promotion Centre (GIPC), and the Ministry of Trade and Industries.
