The Member of Parliament for Bawku Central, Mahama Ayariga, has expressed his outrage over the military violence that occurred in Garu on Monday, leaving several civilians injured.
He described the incident as “barbaric and unacceptable in today’s Ghana”.
Ayariga stressed that he would join his fellow MPs from the Upper East Region to demand a full-scale inquiry into what happened.
According to Ayariga, he received calls around 3 a.m. on the day of the incident, informing him of the presence of Ghana Armed Forces personnel in the Garu area, who were assaulting anyone they encountered.
He said he tried to contact the Minister for National Security, but he was not aware of the situation as he was in Europe.
Ayariga said he saw “horrendous photos” of the victims of the military violence and extended his sympathies to them.
He recalled that he had discussed with the Minister for National Security a few days earlier about some national security operatives who had been stopped in Garu and handed over to the police.
He also mentioned media reports of the alleged shooting of the vehicle used by the national security operatives by unknown persons in the Garu area.
He said if the incident was a retaliation by the soldiers, it would be “most unfortunate and unacceptable in today’s Ghana” and that the military personnel involved in this “dastard act” should be held accountable.
