Former Deputy Interior Minister and MP for Berekum, Captain (Rtd) Nkrabeah Effah Dartey, has stated that the June 4 coup d’état should not be celebrated in Ghana.

According to him, the basis for which the military staged the coup on June 4 1979 was unfounded and the fact that innocent Ghanaians were murdered for no wrongdoing.

Speaking on Yesempa on Onua FM on Friday 4th June 20201 and monitored by MyPublisher24.com, the retired Army Captain stated that the removal and seizure of government on June 4 1979 by the late Flt. Lt. Jerry John Rawlings was the bloodiest coup in Ghana’s history.

June 4, he said, is a memory that should be blanked out due to the killings and the blood of innocent people that was spilt during the military takeover.

He said, “The event of that day will remain a terrible memory that Ghanaians who are above 50 years of age and witnessed what happened would want to forget.”

“4th June is the bloodiest coup in the history of Ghana where young soldiers who have not been in the military even for 5 years used guns to attack the command structure.”

“It was a crime to be an officer in Ghana Army on 4th June. That day, in fac,t it was terrible, it was very terrible and it propelled Boakye Gyan and Jerry Rawlings into authority as the administrators of Ghana,” he added.

The former Deputy Minister noted that the level of corruption and indiscipline at the time did not warrant a coup d’état as purported by the coup perpetrators condemned the conduct of the military for their action on June 4.

He stressed that soldiers should never be allowed to be administrators of the nation ever again because they do not have monopoly over power.
