Former President John Dramani Mahama has tagged claims by the Vice President that the erstwhile NDC administration completed only 29 out of the 200 E-Block educational infrastructure it promised.
The claim, he said, is a blatant lie because the former Minister of Education, Mathew Opoku Prempeh was on record to have said the NDC administration completed 46 of these projects, which was also contained in the handing-over notes.
“Between these two persons, someone is lying and I believe the Vice President is the one lying based on the number of E-Blocks I even commissioned. So if Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia says only 29 have been completed he is lying,” he said.
Speaking on Power FM as part of his Greater Accra ‘Thank you tour’ on Tuesday, Mr. Mahama indicated that the major damage that the Akufo-Addo government has done to the republic is the mistrust it has bred between Ghanaians and the political leadership.
Ghanaians, he said, no longer trust their political leaders because of the failed promises of the Akufo-Addo-led New Patriotic Party (NPP) administration.
He wondered whether those in the NPP learn how to lie at the University or they develop the characteristics of lies only after joining the party.
He averred that he personally commissioned 36 of the structures but stressed not all were occupied before the NDC left government because of the academic calendar.
He averred that the Akufo-Addo/Bawumia government only continued the World Bank sponsored E-blocks when it took over power because the previous government had already sourced the funding, and was at the Bank of Ghana and the only thing needed to do was pay the contractors after they complete work.
According to him, the 50 projects being sponsored from the GETFund were abandoned by the NPP after it stopped contractors and claimed it was going to audit the projects.
“So when you see them claim they have completed 30, they are only talking of the World Bank-sponsored project for which we had already sought funding and the money was already in the bank.”
“But the ones under the GETFund and being financed by the government they have abandoned them because they have mortgaged 60% of the GETFund for a loan of GH¢1.5 billion.”
“So for the next 15 years the amount of money that comes into the GETFund is not even up to 40% that is why they are unable to pay contractors to complete this category of projects,” he added.
