Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has derided former President John Dramani Mahama on his ‘do or die’ comment and how the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) handled its election petition at the Supreme Court.

He questioned how the former President and his party could fight an election result at the courts without pink sheets.

Dr. Bawumia, laughing uncontrollably, urged Mr. Mahama not to go to court without pink sheets else his case will die a natural death.

The Vice President took the opportunity to poke fun at the NDC 2020 flagbearer when he delivered the keynote address at the Ghana Construction Industry excellence awards on Friday.

Mr. Mahama has been the subject of media debate following his infamous ‘do or die’ comment, which has seen various sections of the Ghanaian society condemning it as an incitement to violence in the 2024 general elections.

Speaking on Techiman based radio station, Akina FM, Mr. Mahama stated that the 2020 election has taught the NDC that elections can only be won at the polling stations, thus they will not let their guards down.

He said the elections will be won or lost at the polling station, so at the polling station, it will be ‘do or die.’

The former President, however, took the pains to explain that his use of the idiom ‘do or die’ is a demand for the right things to be done on Election Day and for the NDC to be vigilant at the polling stations.

Dr. Bawumia could, however, not resist responding to the former President and poking fun at him for the pink sheet drama that the NDC put up at the Supreme Court.

He said, “…Let me congratulate the award winners for tonight and I wish those who could not make it better luck in 2022.”

“You know, when you go for these competitions and awards, (laughing) it is not do-or-die so we wish you better luck in 2022.”

“(Laughing uncontrollably) But seriously, if you go to court to challenge an election result and you have no pink sheet, then your case will die,” he added, which sparked wild laughter among his audience.

The NDC challenged the 2020 election results at the Supreme Court but surprisingly the party failed to present pink sheets and the results of the collation that it did on which it claimed it won the elections.

Mr. Mahama later filed a motion at the court asking the Electoral Commission (EC) to furnish him with all 275 original copies of constituency collation forms for the presidential election.

However, the lawyers for the EC and the President opposed the application and argued the former President and his legal team were using the “back door” to seek further information from the EC that were not captured in their petition.
