Former Deputy Chief Executive of the Forestry Commission, Musah Superior, has mounted a strong defence of Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, describing as baseless and misleading the recent criticisms by Kennedy Agyapong regarding Bawumia’s 2028 presidential bid.
Reacting to the Assin Central MP’s claim that Bawumia’s performance in the 2024 general election was “abysmal” and grounds enough to deny him a second flagbearership bid, Musah Superior asserted that such remarks were unsubstantiated and driven by propaganda.
“If Kennedy Agyapong had led the party in the 2024 elections, he would have performed even worse,” Musah Superior fired back in a statement dated June 9.
According to him, Dr. Bawumia, affectionately known as DMB, carried the party through a challenging campaign period marked by internal weaknesses and public disillusionment.
“We all know we lost so badly because DMB rode on a weak and spiritless party, an unpopular government and overly incompetent national leadership,” he stated.
Musah Superior insisted that Dr. Bawumia remains the most popular and beloved figure within the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and is the best-suited person to lead the party into the 2028 elections. He described Kennedy Agyapong’s criticism as lacking in both context and historical understanding.
“Whatever Kennedy says does not change the fact that DMB is loved and cherished by the overwhelming masses of our party people and will eventually emerge the winner in the NPP flagbearership contest for 2028,” he declared.
He stressed that the NPP’s democratic tradition allows every eligible member to contest for leadership, but urged that debates over leadership be conducted with mutual respect and party unity in mind.
“The NPP will not abandon the person who led the charge since 2008 and helped us win power in 2016 and retain it in 2020. DMB was our main campaigner for twelve good years,” he said, describing the former Vice President as “our storyteller” who inspired hope and exposed the flaws of the NDC.
Musah Superior listed several reasons why Dr. Bawumia should be retained as the party’s flagbearer:
- Widespread Popularity: He said Bawumia is the most marketed and recognisable political figure in Ghana, with grassroots support across the country and abroad.
- Unifying Force: He described DMB as a humble and egoless leader, admired for his calm and inclusive style.
- NDC’s Nightmare: He claimed Bawumia is feared by the opposition for his boldness, intelligence, and progressive ideas.
- International Appeal: With his strong background in finance and economics, he said DMB is well-positioned to navigate Ghana’s complex domestic and global challenges.
Musah Superior further called for a renewed and united effort to support Dr. Bawumia’s candidacy, stressing that the 2028 elections will be a pivotal moment for the NPP to reclaim national leadership.
“Our objective is clear—defeat the NDC in 2028, and DMB is our strongest foot forward. He deserves our fullest support, sincere guidance, and honest feedback,” he stated.
He appealed to DMB supporters to maintain decorum in the ongoing internal contest, cautioning them not to fall for provocations but instead focus on building bridges within the party.
“Our support for his candidacy must aim at making him a better candidate. We must correct the mistakes of the 2024 campaign and present a stronger, more united front in 2028,” he said.
Drawing on historical precedents, Musah Superior reminded party members that former leaders like John Agyekum Kufuor and Nana Akufo-Addo were given multiple opportunities before winning power.
“We must learn from our history. J.A. Kufuor lost in 1996 but won in 2000. Nana Akufo-Addo lost in 2008 and 2012 before winning in 2016. Why should DMB be treated differently?”
He urged the party faithful to rally behind Dr. Bawumia with renewed conviction and unity of purpose.
“DMB remains the mover and shaker. Let’s all support him. We are in this together—and we must win 2028 together.”
