Assin Central MP Kennedy Agyapong has accused Vice President Dr. Bawumia and Ashanti Regional Chairman of the NPP Bernard Antwi Boasiako aka ‘Chairman Wontumi’ of collapsing the party.
Addressing a mammoth rally at the Jubilee Park in Kumasi, the lawmaker, who is seeking to lead the party ahead of the 2024 general elections, did not mince words when he took on the duo, stating that their utterances could destabilize the party.
“You [Wontumi] sit on your television station and insult elderly people. You ditched Alan to support Bawumia and I don’t have any problem with that, but don’t insult. You are not the only people with license to insult. I am telling you Bawumia and Wontumi are collapsing NPP”, he said as he accused the Vice President of intimidating delegates ahead of the NPP race.
“We will not sit down for them to destroy the party. They shouldn’t make mistake because I will be ready for them. There have not been any presidential race where chief executives and top appointees in government supporting one candidate, but they should try that again and they will see what will happen in this party”, the lawmaker stated.
‘Big offers’
“Many party stalwarts have begged me to step down for Bawumia. But I have rejected it due to the love for the NPP and Ghana. I wish to remind you that when they offer you money take it but reject them during the polls”, Ken Agyapong said.
Tribal politics
Mr Agyapong also cautioned his party against resorting to tribal politics. He says such utterances could be inimical to the growth and development of the party in the long-term, reiterating his wider call for fair treatment of all contenders in the upcoming flagbearership race.
Mr Agyapong warns of a faceoff should any candidate engages in tribal and religious politics ahead of the race.
Hundreds of party supporters joined the street walk held in the Ashanti Regional capital dubbed ‘Showdown Walk’. Known party stalwarts who were present took turns to address the supporters in that rally.
The next event will be held in the Central Region, an official disclosed.
