VGMA 23 Unsung category nominee, Ama Nova, shared her musical journey on TV3 New Day.
According to Ama Nova, her first stint with music started with an invitation as a backup singer after singing in the church choir. Ama Nova started off with an internship role at a radio station after school with a few corporate gigs for companies before finally deciding to make public her vocal ability.
“You know, the girls, we always start with some broken heart. I had my first broken heart when I was about 19 years. I have not had it again. I had just lost my mother. I was grieving, and then the person was sleeping with my best friend. I was broken. I have not said this anywhere, but it was the first time I thought of suicide. I just wanted to die. And I wasn’t eating. Only, in the room, crying day and night.
“My best friend got pregnant with my boyfriend of 4 years. And this was a friend who was at my mom’s funeral with me, we had the same cloth. We do everything together. We were in school together.”
Ama Nova disclosed that she started music professionally in 2017 but unfortunately used that period to finetune her art.
“Most of the time, I’m a very deep person. So, normally things that I write comes from a deeper place. So it was just coming naturally from something I had experienced before, but that song, I have never released. For the whole of 2017, all the songs I recorded, I didn’t really release. I just made people listen to it, and then they criticize it. At that same time I was trying to find my sound. I was trying to find a niche,” Ama Nova stated.
