Bruno Fernandes will wear the captain’s armband for Manchester United in the upcoming campaign, as the club confirmed on Thursday.
The 28-year-old replaces England international, Harry Maguire, who saw himself sidelined last season, making just eight Premier League appearances.
Maguire had been stripped of his role on Monday, writing a touching message to fans, but it had not been made clear who would take over the role. It was suspected to be Bruno Fernandes, first reported by ‘The Sun’.
The midfielder had already taken on the responsibility when Maguire was on the bench, as recalled by the club’s statement: “The Portuguese midfielder has already worn the armband for United on numerous occasions and Erik ten Hag has confirmed that he will now lead the team on a permanent basis”.
“Fernandes has scored 64 goals and contributed 54 assists in just 185 games for the club since joining in 2020”, it continued. “As captain, the two-time Sir Matt Busby Player of the Year will continue to drive the highest standards throughout the squad as United push for success in the 2023/24 season and beyond”.
