I read a very exhilarating snippet in one of the dailies that heralded the entry of Hon Bryan Acheampong onto the scene of the impending flagbearership race of the NPP. Wow! Let me calm down while I absorb this good news a breath at a time.

The internal politics of insults, insinuations and dirty maneuverings are running down the NPP, driving it further into an abyss. Already, it has become well known as an ungrateful party notorious for taking and not giving back, while those who advocate for footsoldier rights are vilified as if they are from the stables of the devil. There is nothing you will do for the NPP now that will bring you any form of satisfaction knowing very well that you will not so much as get a “thank you”!

Climate change impact, a looming national crisis

The camps of Dr Bawumia and Kennedy Agyapong have been slugging it out with an innovation never seen before in the NPP. While one claims that he is a Northerner and must not be allowed to lead the party a second time, the other one is playing videos where a potential candidate is seen ranting in twi, foaming at the mouth against a lady saying, “wo twƐ sƆ sƆ tesƐ nestle”! How vile and licentious could it get among supposed brothers. I refuse to translate that dirty statement for the wickedness in its meaning!

I remember in 2023, as the impending contests for our internal elections were picking momentum, the Bawumia camp came up with a term, “BMW”. I made a comment to the effect that BMW neither sounded right nor catchy. The kind of insults that rained on me were of a different nuance, directly from the rotten bark of a baobab tree standing morosely in the savanna of a dusty village in the North. I was repulsed and disgusted, but I let it go because I regarded Dr Bawumia as a brother. In my candid opinion, the two notorious camps are in no position to campaign if insults are the modus of their strategy.

The reason that I am delighted with the news that Bryan Acheampong is lacing his boots to join the fray is that he is one decent person who does not believe in trading innuendos, although his tactical punches are known to sting and make you “Twa hwe”; faint, that is! It is my belief that at this time, the NPP needs new faces, new strategies, new ideas; a fresh start, if you like! The faces we are all used to that have not brought much to the table are decades old. With new vigour, energy, and squeaky clean reputation, we just may be able to drive a wedge into the 2028 elections and win it, resoundingly.

The whole NPP party is still in shock at the unprecedented defeat in the 2024 elections by John Mahama, who Nana Akufo-Addo pulverised in 2016 and 2020, consecutively. He returned to give Dr Bawumia a dose of worse venom with a gap that has gone down in Ghana’s history as space equal to that between earth and Mars. Our Party deserved the pain and humiliation, if you ask me. How dare the executives, MPs, MDs, DGs, Ministers, Deputy Ministers, MCEs, DMCEs and other appointees misbehave in such unforgivable manner as to erode the gains of His Excellency Nana kufo-Addo. It became extremely difficult for most of them to be kind to footsoldiers and the grassroots, so when the party base did not vote, it was clear that the party was served a premeditated punishment; AND SERVED WELL, TOO!

Hon Bryan Acheampong (Dr) may well be the key to unlocking the doors of victory in grand style. Even though I do not wish to take sides in this contest, I would like to see fresh blood and energy injected into our inefficient and incompetent party handled by incompetent executives whose main concern was fattening themselves in preparation for hibernation; a very long season that they plunged us into!
