“I am very grateful to Honourable Bryan Acheampong, who has supported me in providing the documents. He has brought documents that are over and above the value of the money required,” he revealed.
Despite this apparent legal victory, Wontumi’s release remains in limbo. According to Appiah-Kubi, a fresh legal application filed at the High Court in Accra—without his prior knowledge—is currently obstructing the release process.
The application in question, filed by Marfo & Associates, reportedly seeks a review of the bail conditions imposed by EOCO. The full details of the motion remain undisclosed, but sources suggest it could alter or suspend the existing bail terms, thereby extending Wontumi’s stay in custody.
Chairman Wontumi, a high-profile and controversial figure within the ruling party, was first interrogated by the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) on Tuesday, May 27, before being transferred to EOCO for further investigations. He is reportedly under investigation for alleged financial improprieties, including suspected involvement in causing financial loss to the state.
The case has drawn significant national attention, with party heavyweights such as former Vice President and NPP Flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, and Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin making public visits to the NIB in solidarity.
As of Friday evening, the NIB facility remained heavily guarded, with a steady crowd of NPP supporters continuing to rally outside, awaiting further developments.
