The Minister for Works and Housing, Francis Asenso-Boakye has called on Ghanaians to attach great importance to their safety and be more mindful in the manner solid waste are disposed off in drainage channels dotted across the country. This, the Minister noted, will be a significant role of citizens in complementing government’s efforts towards finding sustainable solutions to the perennial flooding especially in Accra.
Government’s huge interventions towards addressing the flooding menace are being undermined by inappropriate behaviour of residents of some communities in Accra, particularly, along the Odaw channel and other flood prone areas.
Despite these challenges, Asenso-Boakye said the Ministry through the collaboration with private companies, will continue to pursue solutions to ameliorate the challenges as well as sustain the gains as a result of the financial investments made over the years.
The sector Minister made these remarks during the commissioning of IHC Beaver 50 Cutter Suction Dredgers and marine equipment by Dredge Masters Limited (DML) today in Ashaiman.
Recounting the contribution of Dredge Masters towards solid waste and flood management particularly in the Odaw Drainage Channel, Asenso Boakye indicated that DML has since 2015, been undertaking dredging activities along the Odaw Channel, an activity the sector Minister observed, has played an instrumental role in minimizing the risk associated with flooding along the channel.
With flooding increasingly posing significant threat to government’s accelerated socio-economic development agenda, Asenso-Boakye underscored the need for not only frequent dredging of streams and lagoons but also in a manner that is advanced and efficient to enhance storm water conveyance in major drainage channels.
“Indeed, these cutting-edge equipment being commissioned will enhance efficiency, optimize our dredging activities across the country and ensure value for money.” The Minister added.
The Works and Housing Minister therefore commended Dredge Masters for investing in the technologically advanced equipment that will be used to undertake dredging activities as part of government coordinated efforts to minimize the incidence of flooding especially in Accra.
