The Customs Division of the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) has intercepted a shipment of firearms and ammunition concealed in a container at the Tema Port.
The 40-foot container, numbered MEDU4496951 and shipped from the United States, was declared as containing vehicles and personal effects. However, upon inspection on November 4, 2024, Customs officers discovered 53 pistols, 74 magazines, and 65 live rounds of ammunition hidden in suitcases.
Brigadier General Zibrim Ayorrogo, Commissioner of Customs, confirmed the seizure, stating, “Arrests have been made, and investigations are ongoing to unravel the full details of the shipment and its intended recipients.”
The consignees and agent responsible for the shipment were apprehended but have since been granted bail as inquiries continue.
Brigadier General Ayorrogo issued a stern warning to individuals attempting to smuggle firearms without the appropriate licenses. “Such acts are criminal and will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law,” he cautioned.
The Customs Division emphasized its dedication to securing Ghana’s borders and preventing the illegal importation of weapons and other contraband.
Officials reassured the public of their vigilance in safeguarding the nation’s security and addressing any potential threats.
