Fixing The Country Movement has become aware of clashes between NDC demonstrators and the Ghana police earlier today in Kwame Nkrumah circle.
In what has been described by observers as an “orgy of violence”, crowds of several hundred NDC rioters torched cars, set off fireworks, threw rocks and stones at police, and car tyres set on fire.
There was even an attempt to set ablaze a police vehicle during the protests on Tuesday afternoon.
Police used tear gas to disperse the mob. A number of policemen who were deployed to protect the peace, lives and properties were injured in the process.
We are also aware that, the stone pelting continued for over 20 minutes, and other sources said some of the miscreants pelted stones at the police personnel deployed on the main road, as the situation escalated when more people joined the stone pelters.
We understand minor force was used to stop some of the people involved in the violence.
Fixing The Country Movement is appalled at the behaviour of the NDC protesters. It is unacceptable to say the very least, and we expect nothing but heavy-handed approach from the police administration in dealing with the miscreants that have been arrested.
Nobody should be allowed to disrupt law and order. Protesters cannot disregard police instructions and laid down rules and expect to be treated with kids gloves and served with ‘beer and kicbebab’.
The situation where political elements create the scene for state institutions to be blamed for it ought to come come to an end. We saw such occurrences in the Ayawaso West Wuogon by-election.
This was a partisan NDC demonstration and as such we cannot decouple propaganda from the drama that ensued. It was all meant to create dissatisfaction for the government.
Ghana is not a banana republic. We are a civilized society and on the path of building a better society. If people cannot use democratic ways of protest without resorting to violence, then they better leave the country for the rest of us to continue with nation building.
We are by this statement asking the Inspector-General of Police to deal ruthlessly with such elements or our membership will also pour on the street to register our protest.
