DO NOT FORGET, O LORD
Scripture Reading: Psalm 10
He has said in his heart, “God has forgotten; He hides His face; He will never see.” Arise, O LORD! O God, lift up Your hand! Do not forget the humble. Psalm 10:11–12
Throughout the Bible, we see and hear of boastful people whom God silenced. We read of characters like Goliath, Nebuchadnezzar and Jezebel who rose up with pride against God and His people. Many others like them can be found throughout history, who were boastful in their thoughts, utterances and deeds, but who were brought low by God.
People are wicked because they convince themselves that God is not interested in what goes on here on earth. Their boast stems from their misplaced judgment of God’s response to their actions. Having gone unpunished for so long, evil people grow in arrogance. They see God’s forbearance as a sign of His disinterest. This is far from the truth; God takes note and is keenly interested in all that happens on the earth He created.
Until Goliath met David, he had assumed that nothing could touch him. He had won battle after battle by defying the gods of the people he fought against. Goliath had not taken into account that there would be a day of reckoning until the day he met a teenager with great faith in God.
Similarly, Nebuchadnezzar was at the height of his success when God brought him down. He was sure that he had subjugated the people of Israel with their God until a teenager called Daniel showed up in his palace. God often demonstrates His omnipotence by humbling the high and mighty with the lowest and weakest. He knows how to put the proud boaster in his place.
We should never presume that powerful people will always have their way and be able to escape the judgment due their wicked actions. The authority and influence they wield is only for a season. They may defy God and choose not to acknowledge Him. But regardless of whether He is acknowledged or not, God remains God.
God does not forget. He will arise and lift up His hand against the wicked.
Prayer: Heavenly Father, you do not forget your children. Arise, and silence the voice of the wicked in our land. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
