Ghana is sitting on wealthy natural resources yet poor, a former Governor of the Bank of Ghana, Dr Kwabena Duffuor, has observed.
Speaking at a forum organised by the Institute for Financial Services Ghana (IFS), the former Finance Minister said: “The narrative should change immediately, otherwise our children will not forgive us”.
“Our natural resource endowment can change this country if we decide to use them efficiently and honestly”, the owner of the now-defunct uniBank said, observing: “We are not doing that”.
“We cannot disagree that Ghana is a very wealthy nation but Ghanaians are poor; that’s where the problem is.
“Why are we poor but we are sitting on wealth?”
“So, what do we do?” Dr Duffuor asked.
“So, the clergy, what are you doing?”
“The media, what are you doing?” he wondered.
“Ghana is in a crisis”, he asserted.
Dr Duffuor’s bank was among some nine local banks collapsed in the first term of President Nana Akufo-Addo’s government in a financial sector clean-up exercise.
Dr Duffuor is battling aspects of the clean-up exercise with regard to his bank in court.
He also petitioned parliament to probe the collapse of his bank.
