The Electoral Commission (EC) has refused a request by the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) for the serial numbers of Biometric Voter Registration (BVR) kits being used in the ongoing voter registration exercise.

The Commission cited multiple security and integrity risks and emphasised the need to protect the electoral process.

“The security and integrity of our electoral processes are paramount. Disclosing serial numbers of BVR kits could significantly compromise the safety and fairness of the registration process,” Acting Director of Public Affairs at the EC, Mr. Michael Boadu, emphasized the need to protect the electoral process.

The NDC had argued that access to the serial numbers would enhance transparency and accountability in the electoral process.

However, the EC in a statement outlined several potential risks associated with such disclosure: These include compromise of kit security, which will facilitate unauthorized access to the BVR kits, specific kits could be targeted for attacks or manipulation, criminal activities such as phishing could be enabled, using the serial numbers while proper protocols for kit activation and operation might also be disrupted.
