The Electoral Commission (EC) has announced that District Assembly elections will be held on 19 December 2023 across the country.

As prelude to the polls, the EC will conduct three-week voter registration exercises from Tuesday 12 September through to Monday 2 October 2023, and it will be done at the various district offices of the EC.

Addressing the press at a briefing dubbed “Let the Citizens Know,” ChairperChairperson of the Commission, Mrs Jean Mensa indicated that the 2023 assembly elections (DLE) will take place in all the 6,272 electoral areas in all districts with the exception of Nkoranza North and South in the Bono East Region.

“The DLE for the two districts was not held in 2019 for security reasons. They were conducted in April 2021. As such, elections will not be held in both districts until 2025” Mrs Jean Mensa said.

“The Commission has developed a comprehensive programme of activities for the 2023 DLE. This will be made available to the public. As a Commission, we encourage eligible voters to take advantage of the voter registration exercise and register to vote.

“We also entreat the citizenry to participate in the district level elections, which will be held on Tuesday the 19 December as that is the surest way to ensuring development at the local level” the EC chair added.

Continuous Registration Exercise

The EC chairperson in her statement also underscored that it is her anticipation that the three-week registration exercise for the DLE will not be the sole registration exercise before the 2024 general elections.

“It is our hope that with the passage of the draft CI, we will institute an all-year-round registration exercise, that is, a “Continuous Registration Exercise” in all our district offices nationwide to afford eligible first-time voters the opportunity to register to vote at a time of their choice” Jean Mensa remarked.
