The Youth Wing of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) has expressed staunch support for Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atto for his handling of the current economic crisis.
The Finance Minister, it said, deserves encouragement to get his acts right and bring reprieve to the Ghanaian people and not criticism.
According to the wing, before COVID-19 struck, Ghana’s economy still under Ofori-Atta, was celebrated as the fastest-growing economy in the world.
Addressing a media engagement in its maiden forum dubbed ‘Truth and facts series’ on Wednesday, May 31, 2023, National Youth Organizer of the party, Salam Mustapha said, “If through no fault of his but the fury of Mother Nature and a major war in Eastern Europe, there is an economic crisis, we believe sincerely, his portion is not opprobrium and unjustified vilification.”

“Rather, he needs encouragement to get it right and bring us all reprieve.”
The Truth and Facts Series forum will hold periodic media engagements to put before the Ghanaian youth and the entire populace, the policies of the government, the NPP as a party, and general issues of interest to all Ghanaians.
He stated the current world economy is in turmoil and every country is experiencing significant inflation and pushing up the cost of living and its attendant difficulties.
According to him, there are serious economic crises in Europe and even America for the first time in many years.
“In Africa, the story is similar to 29 African countries, currently before the IMF, negotiating for one program or the other.”
“It is for these reasons that we believe the attempts to put the blame of the economic difficulties on Hon. Ken Ofori-Atta are uncalled for with no plausible justifications.”
“At best, the finance minister deserves commendations for working tirelessly to secure this deal for Ghana. It is important to emphasize the point that many of the countries negotiating for programs with the IMF have spent more than a year, some more than two years but they are yet to be given approval by the Fund.”
According to Salam Mustapha, NDC MPs in Parliament including the Minority leader Dr. Ato Forson, Isaac Adongo and Clement Apaak had claimed there was no way the IMF would grant Ghana a S$3 billion request.
Ken Ofori-Atta, he said, used less than a year to get Ghana this deal, “And that deserves applause, not chastisement. Therefore the Youth Wing stands with the Minister for Finance, Ken Ofori-Atta.”
