The Private Newspapers and Online News Publishers Association of Ghana (PRINPAG) has called on its members to uphold professionalism and foster peace through their reportage as Ghana gears up for the crucial 2024 General Elections today.
PRINPAG reminded journalists of their vital role in ensuring credible and peaceful elections while maintaining the integrity of their profession.
“Journalists are the watchdogs of democracy, and their work significantly impacts national cohesion.”
“We urge all our members to adhere to the highest professional standards, verify facts before publication, and avoid sensationalism or unverified claims that may inflame tensions,” Executive Secretary of PRINPAG,” Jeorge Wilson Kingson advised in a statement.
PRINPAG outlined six critical responsibilities for its members during the election period:
1. Adhering to Professional Standards: Ensuring accuracy, fairness, and the avoidance of misinformation.
2. Promoting Peace and National Cohesion: Publishing content that fosters unity rather than division.
3. Maintaining Neutrality: Steering clear of partisan bias.
4. Encouraging Civic Responsibility: Educating the public on peaceful electoral participation.
5. Upholding Ethical Judgment: Following PRINPAG’s Code of Ethics.
6. Prioritizing Personal Security: Reporting threats or attacks promptly to authorities.
President of PRINPAG, Andrew Edwin Arthur emphasized the importance of the media’s role in preserving Ghana’s democracy.
“Ghana stands at a critical juncture, and the media has a unique opportunity to champion peace and credible elections. As we inform the public, let us keep the nation’s peace and democracy at the forefront of our priorities,” he said.
The PRINPAG leadership also assured members that the Association’s Secretariat will remain open throughout the election period to provide administrative support and assistance.
“We commend the efforts of all journalists who have worked tirelessly in the lead-up to the elections. Let us continue to serve the nation responsibly and professionally,” Kingson added.
The statement warned that PRINPAG would sanction any members found guilty of ethical breaches or unprofessional conduct.
PRINPAG’s call serves as a timely reminder of the media’s critical role in promoting a peaceful democratic process as the nation heads to the poll this morning.
