The National Democratic Congress (NDC) is currently embarking on a nationwide demonstration in response to the Electoral Commission’s (EC) refusal to allow a forensic audit of the voter rolls.
The protest is currently taking place along approved routes in all 16 regions of Ghana.
Scores of National Democratic Congress (NDC) supporters across the country joined the demonstration to express their displeasure with the Electoral Commission (EC) for what they call flawed voters’ register. The party has raised serious concerns about the register’s credibility, which they believe could jeopardise the integrity of the December 7 elections.
The NDC accuses the EC of refusing to allow a forensic audit of the voters’ register ahead of the December elections, citing a number of irregularities.
The EC has maintained that all required corrections in the register have been effected following its exhibition of the provisional register, explaining that the whole essence of the exhibition of the register as demanded by the law (C.I. 91 (as amended by C.I. 126), is to help with corrections.
The deputy general secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Haruna Mohammed, has criticised the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) for its upcoming nationwide protest against the Electoral Commission (EC) on Tuesday (17 September), describing it as the “most useless exercise” he has ever seen.
Speaking on Asaase Radio’s Big Bulletin on Monday (16 September), Mohammed expressed his scepticism about the protest’s ability to effect the desired change.
“I believe the protest of the NDC is the most useless exercise that I have seen ever in my life. These are persons who approbate are reprobate and they don’t actually know exactly what they have to do,” he said.
“I don’t think that this is something that is going to change what they want to do.”
