Hon. Frank Annoh-Dompreh, Member of Parliament (MP) for Nsawam-Adoagyiri and Majority Chief Whip, has responded to some comments made by ex-President John Dramani Mahama on the current economic situation in Ghana.

Speaking on the economic crisis at the launch of a think tank known as Think Progress Ghana, the former President pointed out that Ghana is now left with no other option than to return to the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

According to him, “Due to the nature and depth of our economic problems, this government virtually has no other sustainable option.”

But, in a swift response, Hon. Annoh-Dompreh fired the former President for sending Ghana to the IMF for ‘policy credibility’ even without global economic challenges and coronavirus

“Fair enough but, sir under your watch, you even run to the IMF for policy credibility, even without this novel global economic challenge & Covid-19,” he tweeted.

His tweet added, “Clearly you cannot commend the NPP for political reasons but, within your heart, you know the TRUTH.”

Undoubtedly, Ghana is undergoing economic challenges, especially with prices of petroleum products and food commodities shooting up every now and then.

The government has attributed the current challenges to the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic and the Russian-Ukraine conflict.

Following the crisis, some economists have suggested to the government to go to the IMF for a programme to salvage the economy but the Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta, has touted his confidence in home-grown solutions.
