The Minister for Energy and Green Transition, John Jinapor, has inaugurated a five-member committee to investigate the issues arising from the flooding caused by the spillage of the Akosombo Dam in September 2023.

This initiative forms part of the government’s commitment to managing the impacts of environmental events and ensuring the safety and livelihoods of affected communities.

The committee, chaired by Ing. Kirk Koffi, is tasked with examining the events leading to the spillage, assessing the extent of the response to the flooding, identifying affected areas and challenges encountered, and evaluating strategies adopted to address the impact.

Additionally, the committee is charged with recommending measures for immediate relief and long-term solutions.

During the inauguration, the Energy Minister emphasized the importance of a coordinated response to effectively mitigate the effects of the flooding on affected communities.

“If there ought to be compensation, how does the Government go about it?” the Minister questioned.

He also stressed the need for sustainable planning and improved flood management strategies to prevent similar incidents in the future. Hon. Jinapor called on key stakeholders, including local government officials, community leaders, and environmental experts, to provide the committee with relevant information to aid its work.

John Jinapor further assured the committee of his full support to enable them to carry out their assignment effectively.

The Chairman of the committee, Ing. Kirk Koffi, thanked the Minister for the opportunity to undertake this critical task. He assured the Minister of the committee’s commitment to delivering on its mandate.

Other members of the committee include Mr. Kwame Jantuah, Ing. Kofi Ellis, Ing. Kwaku Akosa, and Ms. Georgette Emefa Fugah (Secretary). The committee has one month to complete its work and submit its findings and recommendations.
